This year, the women’s track team won both the indoor and outdoor MIAC team championships which marks its 13th
consecutive conference outdoor team championship. In this meet, the Tommies scored in 21 of 22 events, including
multiple first place and runner up finishes.
Along with the team successes, St. Thomas sent two individual women to nationals: senior Alex Fossum in the 5000,
where she was seeded 9th out of 17, and junior Laura Eischens for the pentathlon. Fossum finished 10th out of 17 runners, and had a personal best record by five seconds (17: 12. 49). Eischens took 17th in the pentathlon with 2,951 points
and a 16-10 1-2 long jump, along with a 9. 32 in the 60 hurdles.
Other individual awards went to Coach Joe Sweeney, who was named Women’s MIAC Coach of the Year for indoor track
and field. Ten honorees received all-region awards, including: Jalia Anderson and Kendall Novak for pole vault, Eischens
for pentathlon and long jump, Grace Bordson for high jump, Allison Mellin for weight throw, Ali Glassbrenner, Janto,
Carly Barton, and Fossum for the distance medley relay, Janto for the 800 and Fossum for the 3000 and 5000.
Overall, the women had a successful year both as a team and as individuals, supported by an award winning coach.
Sweeney had a huge impact on the St. Thomas women this year, and senior Elizabeth Russel remembers, “My favorite
memory from this season was gathering in a circle on the field after winning both conference championships and listening to Coach Sweeney’s victory speech. I’m so proud of this team for putting in what Coach Sweeney calls a ‘TTE’ – Total
Team Effort. I believe that the bonds made between teammates pushes us to train hard and helped us to achieve two
conference championship titles. We have a well-rounded team, and everyone contributes something valuable.”
The Tommies, proud of their winning year, look forward to their continued successes in the upcoming seasons.
